President Barack Obama and his family began their summer vacation on August 7, 2015. The first family will spend their 16-day summer vacation in Martha’s Vineyard.
Following are the books on President Obama’s reading list that he plans to finish before he gets back to Washington on August 23, 2015.
All That Is – James Salter
James Salter’s All That Is recounts the life of a young man who first worked as a naval officer in World War II and then as a book editor in New York. This novel is all about the likes and life of the World War II veteran named Phillip Bowman.
The Sixth Extinction – Elizabeth Kolbert
A 2014 nonfiction, The Sixth Extinction is about the future of the world. This book talks about the mass extinctions that had happened before. Kolbert says that we are in the midst of the sixth devastating extinction. A lot of species that have already gone and those facing extinction are introduced in this book. Through this book, Kolbert makes the reader think what it really means to be human.
All The Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr
The 2015 Pulitzer Prize winning novel All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, an American author, narrates the stories of two young people. It is about how a young blind French girl and an orphan German boy grew up and survived the devastation caused by World War II.
Washington: A Life – Ron Chernow
Washington: A Life, written by Ron Chernow, is a biography of America’s first President, George Washington. This book won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for biography. This book has a detailed description about George’s adventures as a young officer and his military decisions.
The Lowland – Jhumpa Lahiri
The Lowland, a 2013 novel, is the tale of two brothers growing up in Calcutta, India and in the U.S. One of them remains in India and gets involved in the Naxalite movement while the other moves to the U.S. The book narrates the consequences the two brothers faced based on the choices they made.
Between The World and Me – Ta-Nehisi Coates
Between The World and Me is written by Ta-Nehisi Coates as a letter to his son. The book is about being black in America. Coates has summarized the history of violence against black people in the U.S.
