How many years should I wait to naturalize if I am married to a U.S. citizen?
Generally, a green card holder will need to wait for five years to naturalize. Apart from living here for five years, they also need to meet the other U.S. citizenship requirements.
But the residency requirements for those who received their green cards through their marriage to a U.S. citizen, are different. You just have to wait for three years from the date you received your green card to apply for U.S. citizenship.
The three year rule will apply if you are still married to the U.S. citizen who initially sponsored you. You should have lived with him or her for the past three years. In case you and your husband of wife have divorced or separated, then you may not be eligible to apply for citizenship in three years.
