Immigration Fact of the Week (May 16 – 22)

I am the beneficiary of an immigrant petition and my case is at NVC. What happens next?

Immigration Fact The National Visa Center (NVC) will send you a letter asking you to begin your visa pre-processing with the NVC, if a visa is available for your petition. You will be contacted even if the agency believes that a visa will be available to you in the coming months.

To begin pre-processing your visa, you will have to first choose an agent. You can act as your own agent or ask your petitioner, an attorney, family member, friend or an immigration professional, to be your agent. Once you choose your agent, you will have you pay the required fee to the NVC. You will then be asked to submit the Affidavit of Support (AOS), civil documents and other documents, depending on your case.

If visas in your category are not available, you will receive a letter from the NVC stating that the agency has received your petition and that your application will be on hold till visa numbers in your category become available.
