Will deferred action status provide a path to U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status?
Obtaining deferred action status does not mean that the individual has received some form of legal status in the U.S. This status will not confer permanent resident status or U.S. citizenship on the holder.
Deferred action is a form of prosecutorial discretion, which means, the authorities of an agency, for eg. the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, who deal with deferred action cases have the authority to decide on how to pursue each case they come across. Only the U.S. Congress has the authority to confer such rights with its legislative authority.
However, those in the U.S. with deferred action status will be allowed to remain here for a specific time period and will not be subject to deportation during that period.
