Many don’t wish to leave their pets alone at home when they plan their summer trip. But they leave their pets behind as they believe that traveling with pets involves a lengthy process, which is wrong. If you are planning a trip with your family this summer, you can now take your furry friend also with you as traveling with pets is now not as complicated as it used to be. Some airlines allow pets in the passenger cabin too.
Every country has its own animal health requirements. If you wish to travel with your pet, your pet must meet the requirements of the country to which you are traveling. The following tips will help you have a safe trip with your pets.
As soon as you plan your trip, the very first thing you need to do is to ask your airline about their restrictions on traveling with pets. You must check whether pets are allowed in the passenger cabin. If your pet is not allowed in the cabin, you may be allowed to ship your pet as cargo. The airline may need you to provide a certificate from a veterinarian stating that your pet meets the animal health requirements and is in good health. You may not be required to provide a certificate if your pet is a service animal.
Remember that the carry-on kennel you use to transport your pet must be an approved kennel that will fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines require pets to remain the kennels in the airport and during the flight. Only if the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents need to inspect your pet, you will be required to let your pet out of the kennel.
Make sure you carry a leash. A leash will help you keep your pet under control if you are asked to walk your pet through a metal detector.
The other most important thing that you need to remember is to consider your furry friend’s comfort. Traveling will be stressful for your pet. To make sure your pet is comfortable during the flight, you can feed your pet a light meal two or three hours before you get to the airport. A full stomach might make your pet feel sick. You can also walk your pet before heading to the airport to make him or her feel comfortable. In case you wish to give your pet sedatives to help him or her sleep during the trip, you can check with your veterinarian.
Have a safe and an enjoyable summer with your pets!
