President Obama announced his immigration reform plan on November 20 that will grant more than four million immigrants a temporary relief from deportation. Though this plan will benefit several undocumented families in the U.S., the Republicans are against it. According to the Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, Obama’s executive actions on immigration are “stunning and sad.”
He said that Obama is refusing to accept that only the U.S. Congress has the authority to make changes to the immigration laws and take actions that Obama has taken now. He said that the President must repeal his actions and that the members of the U.S. Congress must block his nominees and some funding until he does so.
Greg Abbott, the attorney general of Texas argued that the President’s executive actions will create economic hardships for Texas and that he is planning to file a law suit against Obama. A law suit against President Obama has already been filed by Joe Arpaio, the Sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County, according to whom the President’s moves are unconstitutional. California Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra defended the President’s executive orders and stated that he can secure the U.S. immigration laws but cannot make change to the immigration laws.
Though the Republican lawmakers are against Obama’s executive actions, there is a lot of support for the executive actions taken by him from immigration reform advocates and immigrants living here. Many in the U.S. are celebrating the President’s actions. New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez told NBC that the President’s actions will deport more felons and strengthen the country’s borders. It will protect families from deportation and help them stay together.
