Birthright Citizenship to Children Born in the United States

A person who is born in America, automatically becomes a citizen of the United States and that is known as birthright citizenship. It is also an easy way to obtain US citizenship. Even if you were born to undocumented immigrants, you will become a citizen of America, if you were born in the country. However, you may not become a US citizen, if you were born on US soil, to foreign diplomats.

You will become eligible for US citizenship by birth, irrespective of the immigration status of your parents. The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, states that the people who are born in the United States, are citizens of the country and the American state where they are born.

However, the United States brought about strict immigration laws and according to that, people who enter into the country illegally will be subject to deportation and illegal entry into the country is considered to be a crime. But there are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. And most of the undocumented immigrants are found to be agriculturalists.

However, many bills were introduced and attempted to limit US citizenship to children who have at least one US citizen parent or a permanent resident parent. Pew Hispanic Center, states that, in the year 2009, more than 4 million children in the United States were found to have to one parent who was authorized to stay in the country and the other parent was an undocumented immigrant.

Children who are born to such undocumented immigrants are referred as anchor babies which is considered to be an offensive and a dehumanizing term. Such children are called anchor babies as people consider that their parents had selected the birth place of their children in order to secure citizenship for the parents. However, the children born to undocumented immigrants may not be able to sponsor their parents for Green Cards in the United States, until they turn 21.
