Immigration Fact of the Week (January 16 – 22)

What should I do with my Green Card?

What should I do with my Green Card?A permanent resident card, commonly known as a green card, is an identification document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). These cards are for foreign nationals who obtain legal permanent resident status in the U.S. USCIS issues these cards to permanent residents as an evidence of alien registration.

All you need to do, if you are a legal resident and if you have been issued one such card, is to keep this card in your possession at all times. Apart from carrying the card with you at all times, you must also make sure that the card you hold is a valid one. That is because these cards are not valid for a lifetime. They come with a ten year expiration date so you need to renew your card before it could expire.

This card will help you identify yourself as a legal resident while obtaining employment in the U.S., while you travel abroad and in certain other circumstances.
