President Obama’s Immigration Reform will Benefit more than 1,70,000 Indians
According to the Pew Research Center, there are more than 450,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the U.S. and they constitute around four percent of the total undocumented immigrant population. Obama’s immigration reform plan is expected to benefit more than 170,000 undocumented immigrants from India. Most of the undocumented Indians became undocumented as they overstayed their non-immigrant student, business or employment visas.
Sofia Vergara Obtains U.S. citizenship
Actress and model, Sofia Vergara recently got through her U.S. citizenship test with flying colors. She moved to America from Columbia in her 20s. Vergara said that she was happy to have scored high in her citizenship test. The 42-year-old T.V. star who is now a U.S. citizen, is the highest-paid female T.V. actress. Her celebrity status did not make the citizenship process easy; Vergara had to jump through all the hoops to become a part of the country.
Al Qaeda operative who once held a green card killed in Pakistan
Adnan Shukrijumah, a top Al Qaeda operative, was recently killed by Pakistani soldiers. Shukrijumah studied at a community college in Florida and was a green card holder. He came to the U.S. in 1995 and was living in Florida with his mother and siblings. He is thought to be the only Al Qaeda leader to have held legal resident status in the U.S.
White House to issue new rules against racial profiling at airports
New rules curtailing the use of racial profiling at airports will be issued by the Obama administration. These new rules will expand the definition of racial profiling and will include religion, gender, sexual orientation and nationality. Law enforcement authorities will not be allowed to consider one of these factors along with race to during routine immigration cases or criminal investigations. However, federal agents will still be allowed to stop people at airports based on their race or ethnicity.
U.S. embassy in Dhaka warns of fraudulent green card lottery emails
The U.S. embassy in Dhaka has warned Bangladeshis of fraudulent diversity visa lottery emails. Emails requesting to enroll in the lottery program are being sent to the people in the name of the embassy. Those looking to apply for the lottery program must remember that the citizens of Bangladesh are ineligible to take part in the program as the country has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. Moreover, they need to remember that the U.S. government does not send emails to people requesting them to enroll in the lottery program or claiming they won the lottery.
